Mosaickr BETA relase

I am happy to announce that just before Christmas we opened mosaickr for limited beta.

mosaickr is an application which lets you create mosaics from flickr photos - either yours, your friends or even other people’s Creative Commons licensed photos. You can download low-res versions for free, high resolution versions for printing can either be paid via PayPal or you can order posters directly with one of our affiliates. (In fact poster ordering is the only limitation of the beta version at this point in time: it’s only possible for Switzerland as of today but should be expanded rapidly.

The project was created by etfd114.1 which is Stefan, Thibaut and myself. The web-application is built on Ruby on Rails. The mosaic calculation runs on external servers and was written in C++.

Conceptually we think a web-application makes sense for mosaic creation for the following reasons

  1. It’s one of the things you do rarely, so no need to buy a special appliaction
  2. Direct integration with flickr lets you choose among your best photos. Also, flickr has nice tools for uploading etc. - no need for us do redo this.
  3. By using Creative Commons licensed photos from other flickr users you can let your creativity flow. You can create a mosaic of a dog made entirely from dog pictures and so on … this would be hard to do with your personal photo collection on your hard drive
