Computer Vision goes mainstream

Two interesting new apps:

Microsoft plans to release Photosynth soon. Photosynth arranges photographs of the same object/location in 3d space by point matches and structure from motion. It won’t create a full 3d construction of the object, just place the phographs at the right plane in 3d. But looks cool anyway. I just wonder how they find out images actually belong to the same object in the first palce. Geotagging maybe? Or you just add them manually …

The new Pentax Optio s7 camera will have face detection. (Not face recognition as written in the linked engadget post). Basically the camera’s AF will “lock” onto faces in the viewfinder, mark them by a rectangle and determine exposure time etc. based on the faces. Very neat! The technology is apparently from Fotonation.
